mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Ok ... here is my issue. I am new to DLNA so I do not clearly understand all the technical aspects yet (but I am trying to learn). There seems to be a wealth of knowledge on the site but I could not pinpoint a possible solution for my configuration. Bottom line. I have .mp4 movies on a NetGear ReadyNAS device that I am trying to play on a BDV-E770 and SMP-N100. Both devices have a USB port which allows them to play mp4 files with no problem via that connection so I know they are more than capable. However when trying to access the files on the NAS which I set as a target in Serviio (or files on my computer running Serviio) I can navigate through the file structure but the dreaded "There is no playable file" message in folders that I know contain the mp4 files.

Here is my operating environment:
* Serviio running on a MS Windows Vista PC
* BVD-E770W (US)
* SMP-N100
* Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2

I initially tried to run the ReadyNAS ReadyDLNA Streaming service and received the same error "There is no playable file" so I contacted Sony and they said that the problem was the Netgear device. So I tried Serviio and got the same results on files located on the ReadyNAS and files located on the PC so I am guessing it is something on the Sony side. First I was thinking that maybe I should try to transcode the .mp4 files to a variety the devices can read like .avi or .wmv but is there another way? I have several hundred movies on my drive. Any assist would be greatly appreciated.

Re: mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Cerberus,
I apologize... I am new to all this. I found the generic profile in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Serviio\config" folder. I however did not know where to find a "Sony" profile. I am guessing that I need to edit the generic profile and rename it accordingly. Is that correct? The next question would be how to point to another profile. In the Serviio console I did not see a place to modify the profile for my BDV-E770.

This is all pretty neat stuff. I just lack the technical know how. My hopes are to learn something from you smart guys and gals out there.

ok no problem mate i can help ya out :) we all have to start somewere ok.

Open the serviio console and you will see a box with lots of IP addresses (192.168.1.etc) and then a name next to it followed by a Profile drop down box, find the one that relates to your device and make sure that the SONY profile is selected :)

Re: mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Damn ... I was clicking on Profile vs. clicking on the cell under profile that corresponded with my BD player. Let me test this out now.

BTW ... Zip ... I set up a test folder on my local system under the C:\ directory and placed a .mp4 file in it. I did check the log and it was loaded.

I am now able to see the file on the BDV-E770. However, I have no ability to control the video play e.g fast forward or rewind. It just plays or stops. Is that how it should work?

I am now going to try the same process with my movie collection on the NAS. If that works I will test the SMP-N100. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks guys.

Re: mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Strange ... but I can't seem to get it to work from the NAS. I have tried to add a local drive (which maps to the share on the computer acting as my DMS) and I have tried to load the path (\\NAS drive\path\) and I can't seem to get it to work. I looked at the log files and I do not see any of the .mp4 files being added to the library. I can however traverse some of the folders on the NAS from the BDV-E770 interface. I am missing something but can't seem to put my finger on it.

ffwd and rewind dont work on certain files i dont remember why but im sure zip will jump in and tell us :)

Adding files to the library can take a long time and adding them from a NAS using a local path will take even longer, it take serviio 24hours to completely build my library for me. :)

Re: mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Looks like it is working. I did as Cerberus recommended and gave it some time. All the video is being transcoded from mp4 to and mpeg version recognized by the BDV-E770.

Question ... What would be the reason why ff and rew do not work once some media files start playing?

The interesting thing is that Serviio seems to convert all files to mpeg however .avi files converted to mpeg allow me to ff and rew but .mp4 files that are converted do not.

I now need to try it with the SMP-N100. My guess is that it would use the same sony profile.

Next question would be ... is there a way to run Serviio from my ReadyNAS vs my windows system. Or would there be a way to modify the ReadyDLNA add-on running on the ReadyNAS to perform the transcode function similar to Serviio.

This is very interesting stuff. You all are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks.

Re: mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Used the same Sony BD player profile for the SMP-N100 and everything is working fine. Will see how things go over the next week. Thanks again for your help!

Re: mp4 on BDV-E770W and SMP-N100 from ReadyNAS

Gentlemen,
I seem to have one issue with the BDV-E770W. It appears that some .avi files that are converted to mpeg do not play. I get an error that says "The file is corrupt or unsupported". However they play just fine on the SMP-N100. Any ideas?

I have beeen able to play pause and fast forward videos from my Windows 7 computers, but If I try to rewind, it goes back to the beginning. Auomatic updates says I have the most recent software. If this can't be fixed, it isn't worth keeping. :x

can you be more specific on your issue as im not sure its related to the topic you posted in, and the " get it sorted " approch wont get your issue fix very quickly as your not paying for serviio ;)
