My video folder shows as empty.

I bought PowerDVD as my VLC was choppy and my buddy has PowerDVD 13 and it plays beautifully.

I notice PowerDVD shows Serviio DLNA, so I don't have to navigate through windows 8 network folders.

Problem is, when I get to the folders it displays as empty. If I navigate with explorer I find all my videos in the folder.

I check Serviio and it shows I have permissions set. Plus it was working a couple of months ago with my Samsung DLNA TV in my living room before my WiFi TV adapter died.

I tried Windows explorer using the Serviio media server function and get the same results.

Thanks for any help

Re: My video folder shows as empty.

If you use Serviio MediaBrowser can you see the folders?

Also, see if this helps: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12667#p77275

Re: My video folder shows as empty.

After a couple of hours searching for Serviio MediaBrowser posts I got it working locally on my WHS 2011 where Serviio is installed.

I couldn't get it working on my Win8 or Win7 machine through the network. I think it's blocking the ports, although the remote tab said in Serviio that it would configure my router for me. (Asus RT-AC66U).

What all ports should I be manually forwarding for Serviio if this is what I need to do?

I can get PowerDVD 13 Ultra partially working on my win8 rig. It gets it through movies folder only. It doesn't get it through the folder named folder like normally in the past. Only a handful of movies/tv shows come up though. Like 6 movies and a single TV show folder of about 20 episodes show up, but not the folder. It seemed to search the folder and list the tv show.

Re: My video folder shows as empty.

Blocked ports will only affect remote access, not access on your home network. Also, if it was ports (or firewalls or other blocking) you wouldn't see the folders at all.

Check your access rights for the drives and folders you are attempting to share via Serviio.

The easiest way is to give the user "Everyone" full read and write access to the folder you wish to share, and all subfolders and files. In Windows Explorer, right click on the folder, select Security tab, Edit, Add and type in "Everyone" without the quotes. Then set the permissions (full control) and press OK. Apply to all sub folders and files.

Note that this will give everyone on your home network access to these folders. If you prefer you can use the "System" user instead of the "Everyone" user in the above instructions (perhaps try this first, if it doesn't work then do again with the "Everyone" user).

Re: My video folder shows as empty.

I checked WHS 2011 Dashboard and my movie folder is set to read/write access for Guest and Mark Johnson.

I checked Serviio Library tab and it doesn't have a properties folder. OK, I right-clicked the Movie folder and it had No Restrictions with a checkmark next to it and grayed out. There is a "Limited option without a checkmark and bold.

I did set Everyone access when configuring the folders.

I didn't set my other folders in Serviio. I have a lot of subfolders and assumed Serviio would pick up the subfolders as well. Do I need to grant access to each subfolder as well? even if I need to, I still don't get 90% of the videos on the main Movie folder.

OK, I did the Windows Explorer Security tab and added Everyone with Full Control. I checked System properties first and it was already set to Full Control.

Anyway, no change. WMP and PowerDVD 2013 Ultra only get partial results. (win7 and win8 machines same results)

Windows Explorer works if I go to the folder's folder, but not the movies folders. In fact, Windows Explorer's Movie folder shows the same info as both WMP and PowerDVD show under the folder's folder.

Yes serviio will normally pick up all sub-folders, you do not need to specify them individually (as long as the Servio Service has access rights to these folders and all files contained within them).

OK, I did the Windows Explorer Security tab and added Everyone with Full Control. I checked System properties first and it was already set to Full Control.
OK, this is what I was looking for...

Anyway, no change. WMP and PowerDVD 2013 Ultra only get partial results. (win7 and win8 machines same results)
We need to remove all this software from the equation. What do you see when you browse via Serviio's MediaBrowser (see http://www.serviio.org/mediabrowser)?

Windows Explorer works if I go to the folder's folder, but not the movies folders. In fact, Windows Explorer's Movie folder shows the same info as both WMP and PowerDVD show under the folder's folder.
This is further confusing - Windows Explorer can't see these files (how do you know they are there??)!!?

--------------------------
I am starting to believe we have gone down the complete wrong path with this. When you say "Movies Folder" do you mean the Movies category in the Serviio menu? If so, seeing only a few of these movies simply means the metadata for these files hasn't been found. The Movies, Series, Actors, Directors, etc categories are all populated based on the metadata for the file. Only the Folders category in Serviio shows the files as they are stored, based on file name not metadata.

For example, if I have a file called Yes Man (2008) DvDRip.avi stored in my foldername folder on my PC (and shows as such in Windows Explorer) then in Serviio this will appear in the Serviio category Video,Folders, foldername as Yes Man (2008) DvDRip.avi. If metadata is found for this file, it will also appear in the the Serviio category Video,Movies category as the film title - in this case Yes Man.

Note that the Serviio Movies category is not a folder on your PC (and therefore you won't find it under Windows Explorer). Unfortunately it gets confusing as most users store their movies in a folder called Movies and Serviio has a category called Movies, but the two are not the same thing.

If this is your issue, then it is fixable. Firstly check the Series category - if your files are a TV series, Serviio may have categorised them there. Secondly, and more likely, is that you will need to rename your files so that Servio can find the metadata for them. Serviio uses the file name to determine what movie the file contains - generally the file name should be in the format Movie Name (year).xxx for a movie and Series Name SxxExx.xxx for a TV servies. Have a read of the wiki article http://www.serviio.org/component/conten ... extraction and take particular attention to the file naming scheme required for on-line metadata sources.

Renaming your files should fix this issue (if this is it), but you may still have the odd one you cannot get metadata for. Use the tool FileBot to help with renaming those - if you find you need to do this, search the forum for my posts on using FileBot to help rename files.

Re: My video folder shows as empty.

In Win8, Serviio now shows up in My Computer under the category Network locations, AKA Media Devices in win7. Except Win8 uses Windows Explorer instead of WMP like win7 does. (btw. in Win7 WMP finds nothing at all after adding the "Everyone" group with full control permissions)

I am starting to believe we have gone down the complete wrong path with this. When you say "Movies Folder" do you mean the Movies category in the Serviio menu? If so, seeing only a few of these movies simply means the metadata for these files hasn't been found. Only the Folders category in Serviio shows the files as they are stored, based on file name not metadata.

At least I'm not the only one getting confused. lol

My folder in WHS 2011 is called "Movies" as well. This adds confusion. without specifics I can't say for sure if it applies to the folder or the Serviio menu which is also confusing to me.

How does metadata get extracted/created? There are a ton of videos not being listed. but some are listed so it seems to be working somewhat. This sounds like it may be the issues and not permissions.

Note that the Serviio Movies category is not a folder on your PC (and therefore you won't find it under Windows Explorer). Unfortunately it gets confusing as most users store their movies in a folder called Movies and Serviio has a category called Movies, but the two are not the same thing.

But shouldn't the Folder menu should still list folders? and even all files unfiltered? This is the main one I'm using as I'd assume it would just list everything like Windows Explorer.

OK, the Series Menu is showing a lot more stuff. It shows the series icon (instead of a folder) and then the episodes are inside when I open it.

OK, so it is gets the metadata from the filename. That's fixable, but should already be in the proper format.

I'll check the wiki article for more info.

Renaming your files should fix this issue (if this is it), but you may still have the odd one you cannot get metadata for. Use the tool FileBot to help with renaming those - if you find you need to do this, search the forum for my posts on using FileBot to help rename files.

Thanks, that's good to know, I'm sure I'll need it. Does this work for homemade videos?

and thanks again for all of your help.

Re: My video folder shows as empty.

I don't think this path will work. It should point to either a local folder or (on Linux) a mount point.

So you could set up something like /mnt/media and point it to 192.168.1.6/video (if that is indeed your remote folder that doesn't reside on the serviio server)

I believe what Zip is saying is the path "/192.168.1.6/video" is invalid. On a Windows PC a local folder would be stated as a drive letter (i.e. C:\movies), but on Linux it is a different format. Is the IP address listed your Serviio box? If so, the correct path would be more like "/video", assuming the folder is directly off the root partition.

If the video folder is on a different computer, then using a UNC path would be more accurate. A UNC to that computer would be "\\192.168.1.6\video\". You would also need to ensure permissions are set correctly on the video folder. Notice on the Serviio console that there are two buttons for adding the folder paths, one says "Add Local" and the other says "Add Path". Add Local lets you browse the local computer for the location. Add Path requires entering a UNC.

Also, if Serviio doesn't believe the file can be played on the device, it won't show under the Movies or Titles listings. I believe it will still show under the Folders listing, but I could be mistaken.

yes, the root folder will be shown under Folders even if it actually doesn't exist. It'd then be obviously empty.
