Successful install on Zyxel NSA-325

Having been a happy Serviio user on a PC/Server for some time, I moved my file storage to a Zyxel NSA-325 (1.6Ghz arm, 512MB ram) at Christmas. It comes with Twonky - but that wouldn't serve AVI file to my Sony Bravia TVs. So a few days of happy googling and reading and I have Serviio running on my NSA325 quite happily. It even seems to cope with transcoding which is an unexpected bonus.

Once I've been back through my notes I'll hopefully pull all the detail together, but in essence its enabled by the work done for the Fonz Fun Plug environment which is available as a package on the Zyxel NAS :-)

High level view...
1) Install FFP 0.7 zyxel package (after adding additional Zyxel repository)
2) Add the various FFP site definitions
2) Install ffmpeg/lame via ffp (Slacker util)
3) Install Java
4) Install Serviio

Enjoy decent DLNA server :-)

Many thanks to those that created the various tools (and how-tos etc) to make the above possible !

Cool. Even better, a Wiki article would be great.

Re: Successful install on Zyxel NSA-325

In practice this has now been working very well. The family haven't noticed the move from PC Server to NAS - which is a good thing.

The zyxel seems to handle some simple transcoding just fine. My Sony Bravia doesn't handle mkv natively so 2 examples....

1) mkv with AVC video + AC3 audio - remuxed only = 500+ frames/second
2) mkv with AVC Video + DTS audio - remuxed and audio transcoded to AC3 = 20 frames/second (i.e. not enough!)
3) mkv with AVC Video + DTS audio - remuxed and audio transcoded to AC3 with AC3_fixed specified = 34 frames/second (i.e. enough)

I also tried (3) with "-re" specified on the ffmpeg command line to match the output to the input frame rate and then only used 50% cpu @ 24 fps. It would be nice to have an option to specify this in the same way as the ac3_fixed codecs. (I'll post separately in features).

Now most of my mkvs have actually been remuxed in advance to mp4 with ac3 (with avidemux) which suits the TVs perfectly, but the above gives me the confidence that I could just load them up in original format.

Re: Successful install on Zyxel NSA-325

I have a wiki page ready and have registered on the Wiki, but the only page I can create is my own rather than a page in the nas_install area ?

Edit: Have added as a Howto here on the forum for now.
