Serviio not visible to clients on LAN (Linux problem only)

Hi guys,

I'm new here, and I've finally run into a problem I can't solve on my own.

I have been running Serviio Media Server on macOS for the last few years without problems. My problems showed up when I wanted to test it on a linux box I've set up as a server. The box is running Xubuntu 18.04.2, with all updates installed, and have OpenJDK installed (version 11.0.2) for Java.

Anyway the problem is, none of the clients on the local network can see the Serviio Server running on the Linux box, however, the MiniDLNA instance shows up and works fine ( that's on the same box), and Serviio on the Mac runs and shows up without issues.. So, I don't think it's a networking issue as a whole.

First, I put the serviio folder into /opt and copied and pasted the systemD script from this forum as well. Serviio started and ran fine, was able to configure it via the Serviio console, that's when I know the clients didn't show Serviio, however the console showed the clients had connected.

I tried shutting down Serviio on the Mac, and MiniDLNA in case of a conflict, and that didn't resolve the problem. Also tried a system restart of the linux box and device (Sony UBP-X800)

Also deleted Serviio from linux and reinstalled from my user, which also didn't fix the problem of it showing from the server list on the client(S). With that said, Roku Media Player showed the Serviio on the server, but connection failed.

My question is, why is MiniDLNA working, and Serviio on macOS, but installing Serviio on linux can't be accessed ?

Two other pieces of information to offer:

I am running a Netgear R7000 with DD-WRT as the router
I checked the UFW status on the server, and it states inactive, as well as toggling a couple settings in DD-WRT off and back on without change. I ran Serviio a few years ago on linux without issues, but this time around it's not working out so easily.

People have had problems using Java 11 with Serviio. Java 8 seems to work fine. I have Serviio on a Linux Mint box, and it took Java 8 to make it work.

Thanks, I'm going to try and get Java 8 installed. By the way , it's MacinMan, I usually go by iFrog now, and the places I still my other nick, is because I can't change it.

I'll let you know if changing the Java runtime fixes things.

Thanks @atc98092, changing the Java version did fix the problem, now all three servers show up. I have re-configured the system startup script for serviio, and have added media, will give the box a few minutes to finish reindexing then try to play something. Will update this post when done testing.

UPDATE, everything seems to be working. It would be ideal for the dev to fix compatibility with Java 11, it seems like it's installed by default on, at least Ubuntu, maybe mint too. Either way, I got it sorted out.

Glad it's all working. I believe the developer has the Java 11 issues resolved with the next version, which will be Serviio 2.0. I don't know how close to release it is.

Yep, everything has been good, and I've looked up the commands to toggle between Java versions on linux. With that said, I reinstalled java 11, so both are present, and have selected 8 as the version to use until it's OK to run things with the latest version.

The other thing I found out is because of oracle's licensing change of their official java releases, it's no longer possible to install oracle Java from PPA, or other package managers. So for now at least it looks like linux users are stuck with openJDK / JRE, unless manual installation is done from the oracle site directly.

@atc98092, this might be considered off topic, but I wanted to let you know that MiniDLNA also works with Roku Media player as many other things, and it doesn't seem to need the renderer profiles like Serviio has. If you're looking for a simple, basic DLNA server to test with, I think it is a second good option.
