Limit resolution to 720p (PS3 over wifi)

Hi,

is there any way to down scale videos greater than 720p to 720p?
I'm using my PS3 as media player, but the wifi is to slow for playing videos in 1080p.
Best solution would be to edit the PS3 profile.

playing movies with reduced quality over mediabrowser is also working well.
The NAS has a 2x 2.40GHz CPU. Don't know if this is enough...

Homeplug doesn't work at my house, because the electric cabling is not good enough. The signal is jammed.

It's a Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G530 and 8GB of RAM.

Wouldn't it be better to convert to 720p mp4 is your WiFi is bandwidth constrained? Serviio does mpeg2 as standard as is easier on the cpu. Mp4 will create a more bandwidth friendly video which your slow bandwidth could cope with.

If it is truly your WiFi causing the problem then the resolution isn't what you [necessarily] need to change. You need to limit the maximum bit rate.

Serviio can do this by adding the maxVBitrate command to the transcoding instructions. However, before exploring this (which is painful as it will require transcoding all your files, and like NX3 I have reservations about your NAS's ability to transcode 1080p video on the fly) you may want to confirm that it is the WiFi causing the issue and not something else. Try running a cable to the PS3 temporarily, or turning off all other wireless devices or simply moving the PS3 closer (WiFi performs decreases with distance) and seeing if that improves things.

I presume your NAS is wired to the router and not also WiFi. I am also assuming you are running Serviio on the NAS itself, not on a PC to which the NAS is connected?

ps. What file types are we talking about here? Is it an MKV or MP4? If its MKV try remuxing it to MP4 - the PS3 handles these much better. Maybe post MediaInfo details for a file.

I'm running Serviio on the NAS directly (FreeBSD). The NAS is connected to the router, which provides the wifi signal.
Router and PS3 can't be moved. The PS3 hasn't the best spot for a good wifi signal.

I have this issue only with big 1080p videos. The buffering is like stop motion: half a second normal playback, then a short lag and again. The sound is played without delay.
720p movies are working well!

The best way would be to solve this with profiles, because I have another playback devices which can play 1080p. E.g. a XBMC is directly connected to the network (wired 1GE connection).
I'm wondering why this is such a big issue... If I'm using the mediabrowser and choose a lower quality, the movie should also be transcoded?
