I have a Sony W800 TV, the Serviio works fine with it. Except on issue. When I play mkv or avi files with external chinese subtitle files(ass or srt format), all the chinese characters are displayed as empty rectangle frame. I had already make sure the srt file is saved with UFT-8 encoding. also I try to play it on my iPad uses Aceplayer, The result is the same, the Chinese characters just displayed as empty rectangle frame as like the TV.
Does anyone know how I can config the transcoding to get around this?
Thanks A Lot !

Also As reference, I am using the version of Serviio 1.2.1 package for Synology NAS on a Synology DS412+ as a DLNA server. Playing on a Sony W800A TV, and also on a iPad using Aceplayer had the same result.
Thanks,

I had just try using Windows as Serviio Server , the Chinese will come out as normal, but if I use the Synology as server, the Chinese characters still will become empty rectangle frame, they are play at same file and same directory. It work perfectly on Windows, but cannot display on synology side, So Anyone know how I can do to make it work on Synology Side ?
Thanks,

Ask patters on his blog (Synology build download site). I thought it's due to some libraries missing in FFmpeg for special character sets, but if it works on Windows (I assume with the bundled FFmpeg), it seems to be something else.

It seems to be that the font I used in the Synology package
doesn't support all languages (the NAS doesn't have its own fonts, unlike Windows). Can you make that subtitle file available to me via Dropbox or something similar? Thanks.
This font might be a better choice for displaying Asian subs (it has full CJK support):

I guess that's the job of fontconifg, you might need an updated config file(s) for these fonts.

Here is the solution I use.
1. Make sure the subtitle files (srt) encoded with UTF-8
2. Upload Chinese font (TTF) files in to the folder
/volume1/@appstore/Serviio/lib/dejavu-fonts-ttf-2.33/ttf
3. Restart Serviio server, done !
Enjoy ~
