So on Serviio Support & Help sub forum there is a "HOWTO: Provide details of a video file that doesn't play" So I guess I can ask people if they can help get a file to play.

/ffmpeg -i "/home/PUBLIC/TV/Red Riding.s01e01.In the Year of Our Lord 1974.avi"

Input #0, avi, from '/home/PUBLIC/TV/Red Riding.s01e01.In the Year of Our Lord 1974.avi':
Metadata:
encoder : Lavf52.64.2
Duration: 01:41:49.44, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 1140 kb/s
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4 (Simple Profile), yuv420p, 720x576 [PAR 64:45 DAR 16:9], 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc
Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 128 kb/s

my serviio instance is on linux and the render that the file will not play on is XBOX360.
It does play on my android tablet using UnPnP

An help for this issue?

these files are sent natively to the xbox, so it's probably something in the way it's encoded the xbox doesn't like. MIght be anything, I'd recommend reencode.

Transcoded them to to .mkv and now they play. So thanks for the hint.

that's because Serviio transcodes MKV for the xbox, thus you're losing quality 2 times. You should just reencode it into divx and then it should play natively.

It's the MP3 audio stream. Xbox doesn't like it for some reason in the MP4 container.
When I convert videos to MP4 I always retain the original AC3 stream, called "AC3 passthrough" on handbrake.
Also Xbox won't reject a file with multiple audio streams, but it will only play the last one, the one at the bottom of the list.
