Using Serviio on a headless server

Hi all,

I'm using a headless server, and headless also means no X11 libs so no X forwarding over SSH. I was messing around in the Derby DB at first, hacking in the database and stuff. That really sucked. But after a while I figured out that the Servio console uses an REST (over HTTP) API to communicate with the server component. That means

a) you can use a REST client (google for the API doc, ZIP has provided a short PDF) to query and update data
b) you port forward port 23423 using an SSH tunnel (ssh -L23423:localhost:23423 <your-server-hostname>) and just run the serviio-console on this machine

I may have missed some FAQ that points this out, but I hope this forum post helps out others facing the same troubles.

wouldn't just the normal remote console setup work over SSH?

he is so over thinking this when you can just use the remote console to manage the library on a headless server, no ssh required

Aha, so there's the missing piece of the puzzle. There's a remote mode for the console? Didn't run into that.. of course, that's a lot easier.

check the log of the server, is should say starting REST server on IP:port and make sure the IP is the IP of the server

Re: Using Serviio on a headless server

I couldn't get this working either when I tried it (before I had a working web UI on my NAS). However, beckos has written it up carefully on the Synology Forum:
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... 15#p143526

It looks like the confusing bit is that you need to specify the server IP on the client and on the server itself.

Re: Using Serviio on a headless server

Are you running 2 copies of the serviio service? Instead of one copy of the service and one copy of the service console.

How are you starting Serviio? are you starting it directly or running one of the scripts in http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=71.

Re: Using Serviio on a headless server

It says

  Code:
Starting Restlet server exposed on localhost:23423

so the -Dserviio.remoteHost is not done properly. The line above must include the IP you use with this parameter - and it must be the IP that your console can connect to (IP of this Serviio server).

Re: Using Serviio on a headless server

Hello.

Finally som succes; when searching for Dserviio on this forum turns up

To be able to connect from the xp client you have to:
a- modify the ServiioConsole.exe.vmoptions on the xp side, so that it includes the ip of the server. Just add the line
-Dserviio.remoteHost=192.168.xxx.yyy
in the text file

Still tinkering, but think it works now...

Thx all!
