Device profile for Microsoft Surface RT

I'm still wondering whether to buy a Surface so I decided to research media playback first, especially since I had experienced how woefully locked down the iPad was. For Windows RT there's a free DLNA client app called Multimedia 8 which works nicely with Serviio, however the format support needed some tweaking (mkv must be remuxed, there's no DTS support, and m2ts mimetypes needed editing). Multimedia 8 also works on Windows 8, and this Serviio profile ought to assign automatically to all media players built with the Microsoft SDK, not just Multimedia 8. I haven't found a way to get lpcm audio supported yet, which unfortunately means FLAC or WAV audio playback is via transcoding to MP3 for the time being.

Here's the unofficial support format list for Windows 8/RT:
http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-me ... -explained

On my Windows 8 computer, Serviio wasn't listed as a media server in Multimedia 8 until I had used the Charms Menu > Settings > Change PC Settings > Devices, then added Serviio in there. That process is described on the app author's website help page.

I have a Surface 2 RT and have loaded multimedia 8. The device is unable to see my serviio server (1.3.1), i have tried adding it in device settings as suggested above but no luck. Can anyone confirm whether Surface 2 RT works with Serviio?

Thanks

Thanks. I was having trouble seeing my serviio server, i finally deleted the serviio directory and started a new one from scratch. Now it works on my surface RT2. I noticed that the volume is low for online streaming, so I am trying to see if i can tweak that. I have not yet been able to see the content of my video folders with the windows 8 profile that ships with serviio. I was able to browse my folders using a generic dlna profile, but online content was not being shown. I have a feeling something is missing from the windows 8 profile.

MKV files are not showing up at all in Multimedia 8. It looks like Serviio is assigning it the "Generic DLNA Profile". Is there any way to see what Multimedia 8 uses for an identifier so I can adjust the detection? (I can't count on the IP address being the same.)

Try turning on detailed logging and then search your log file. Search for the string 'User-Agent" or "[RendererManager]".

Well, this is somewhat disappointing.

I did find the issue, that Windows 8.1 was not recognized, and I was able to fix it by adding this right after the Windows 8 profile:

  Code:
   <Profile id="win81metro" name="Windows 8.1/RT" extendsProfileId="win8metro">
      <Detection>
         <UPnPSearch>
            <Manufacturer>Microsoft SDK Customer</Manufacturer>
            <Server>Microsoft-Windows/6\.3 UPnP/1\.0 UPnP-Device-Host/1\.0</Server>
         </UPnPSearch>
      </Detection>
   </Profile>

(Note that "win8metro" was included in the Serviio 1.4 install and looks very similar to the profile listed in the post above.) And if I look in the Serviio console as I connect Multimedia 8, I can see the device name "Digital Media Player" on the right IP address is now assigned the profile "Windows 8.1/RT". However, if I look in video folders and browse to a folder with MKV files in it, it still appears empty. :cry:
