I have to say, that this is not a new issue, but quite an old one.
Serviio is displaying german umlauts in the category names incorrectly. I displays a replacement character instead, a quentionmark in a diamond (see screenshot attached).
This happens in the Serviio Web interface and in all my DLNA clients at the same time, so it is not client specific.

Umlauts work perfectly fine in movie titles and in the movie metadata.

Is this a known issue or do I have a misconfiguration in my server? I´m running Serviio 2.3 on a Debian 12 server.

It might be an encoding issue. You should double check that your configuration files or plugins in the serviio/config directory are saved in UTF-8. Also, make sure your Debian server is running the de_DE.UTF-8 locale. If the error persists, it might be a bug and you should report it on the Serviio forum/issue tracker.
