Help- Client freezes at certain videos at specific points.

Hey guys,

I'm having a weird issue for a while now, for several Serviio versions.

As I'm not a native English speaker, I'll do my best to be clear enough,
but if more explanation, or rephrasing is required / needed - just ask.

I have ceratin video files, which at specific points, causes my client to freeze.
It happens with about 5 videos.
Some get stuck after several minutes (3-4), and some after more extend period of time (more than an hour),
But each video always get stuck at the same point.
I only play MKVs, and have total of about 30-40 videos files that, besides the ones in question, plays fine.
When playing the same video files on my PC, using VLC Player, they play just fine,
And if I'm manually skip the freezing-point, the rest of the video plays fine.
I only have 1 client, so other than knowing that the client is freezing, and pc runs videos fine, I have no other frame of refference.
I did notice one strange thing though.
In one of the videos that the freeze occurs, there is a 'sync gap' (not really sure how to call it),
That is, if for instance I know that the part that is about to make my client freeze is about the occur, I forward the video 1 minute using my client's remote.
The timeline shows as it has only skipped one minute, but knowing the movie, I can clearly see that it had skipped more around 4 minutes.
It only happens around the time that the video freezes,
The rest of the timeline / forwarding works just fine.
It is like something around that point in the video file is 'confusing' Serviio / my client, which, eventually, causes the client to completely freeze.
I haven't investigated yet if this also occurs with the other videos, so I can't say for sure its a specific issue with only one of the videos, or it is something they all have in common.

I've tried looking at those videos specs, and compare them to any of the other 30 videos that works fine, but they're all seem pretty much the same.
I've tried peeking at the Serviio logs, but couldn't find anything with the timestamp of the freeze (I have my logs level set to DEBUG).
Those videos causing my client to completely freeze, and the only way around it is to restart the client.

Any suggestions on how I can debug this?

Please post MediaInfo details (see signature) for a couple of files that freeze, and one that doesn't. Also, what device are you playing them on (and what profile).

Also, what client is it that is freezing playback? I had a Sony Blu Ray player that did that, while everything else could play with no problems.

Re: Help- Client freezes at certain videos at specific point

Appreciate the replies guys.

My cables company is also my ISP,
So the device is a mixed device that serves as both my internet router, and cable receiver.
As part of its TV digital interface, it has the capabilities of DLNA client.

Here are some MediaInfo logs for working and freezing videos.

I don't believe it is related to the video's codec / encoding,
Because, as you can see from the above logs, Videos with similar encoding behaves differently.

And as I've mentioned, I don't have any other DLNA to check it on, as a refference.

Any suggestions on debugging it guys?

Thanks.

What profile is being used by Serviio for that device?
Check that you have sufficient space on the drive where your temporary transcoded folder is (as listed on the Delivery, Transcoding) tab in Serviio console.

Re: Help- Client freezes at certain videos at specific point

Oh, sorry,
forgot to mention it....

I use Serviio's default profile,
And currently I don't use transcoding at all.

Although, in the past I have used transcoding,
And in the Harry Potter movie that is freezing (the one in the first MediaInfo log I've posted) the movie would get stuck around the same point (about 10 seconds earlier than the point it would get stuck in, without transcoding),
I haven't checked transcoding with the other movies but, as it didn't made much of a difference as with the Harry Potter movie, I guess the result would be the same.

I have around 50GB free.

Re: Help- Client freezes at certain videos at specific point

Scratching my head.....

Thinking out loud: the fact that its not being transcoded suggests that its either in the encoding of the file (there are so many parameters that it could be...) or perhaps at the point of freezing the bit rate jumps to the point your device or network cannot handle. I don't think the issue is with Serviio (have you tried another DLNA server, eg. Windows Media Server, or even playing the file via USB if your device has that capability?).

Perhaps try remuxing the video - this often fixes any issues with the container. Use the command:

    ffmpeg -i "sourcefile.mkv" -c copy -map 0 "temp.mkv"
and see the resultant file plays any better.

For the bit rate test, enable transcoding and set the profile for the device to DirecTV HD-DVR. This profile transcodes all MKV files, and limits the bit rate in the resultant transcoded file.

ps. make sure all check boxes on the Delivery, Subtitles tab are not checked. Let me know if they were checked as that may change things.

Hi mate.

I'm trying to avoid transcoding,
But as I've said in my last comment, although I've only tried that with the Harry Potter movie, transcoding didn't seem to make much of a difference.
The video seemed to freeze more or less around the same point.

I don't believe it is a bit rate issue, since I have about 3 MKVs with high bitrate, around 35mbps, and they do play,
They stutter becuase the bitrate is too high to handle (I've read someplace the dlna can handle max bitrate of around 20mbps, or something like that), but they do play without freezing.

Anyways,
I've just downloaded TVersity media server,
And, although I haven't done a 'full-test' (meaning watching the freezing videos from start to finish, to see that the freezing point has just been 'offset' to some other place in the video), but forwarding to the parts the causes the freeze while using Serviiio, seems to play fine while using TVersity.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: Help- Client freezes at certain videos at specific point

Just an FYI. Not sure if there is a true bitrate limit via DLNA, but I have seen over 40 Mbps with my Sony Blu-Ray player streaming from my Serviio box. I've seen this high of bitrate with with two or three of my Blu-Ray rips. I haven't tested DLNA with hardly any 4K videos yet, and I don't have a 4K playback device that shows the active bitrate like my Sony players do. The one I have tried shows an overall bitrate of 40 Mbps, but that's likely the average with much higher peaks. This video has played without stutter, so I don't think there's an issue with that.

Re: Help- Client freezes at certain videos at specific point

You can check if a momentary spike in bitrate is causing the problem with Bitrate Viewer.

http://www.videohelp.com/software/Bitrate-Viewer-2

It will give you a graph of bitrate over time, and a peak bitrate. Check for spikes around the point where your
file freezes.

Did you try DenyAll's suggestion to remux the file ?
I have fixed many glitchy files with a simple remux.
