Serviio

Hello Petr. It's been since 2010 that I last ran Serviio, and wow is all I can say about v1.6! It's come so far, and the Console GUI looks great...so many improvements! I had been using a Buffalo Linkstation NAS, and it went caput, so I'm back to using an external drive with your software again. Anyway, I noticed that for some reason the Library isn't refreshing as soon as new files are added, or at least they aren't showing up using the Roku Media Player. I seem to have to access the Console from the PC and force a refresh, and even then the files aren't showing up on Roku, where the pop-ups show the files being scanned in Console. Is there another player I should be using with Roku Streaming Stick instead of the Roku Media Player? Cheers.

FYI: to my knowledge there are only two DLNA clients for the Roku. One is the Roku Media Player and the other is Chaneru. Chaneru came first, and the developer put a lot of work into it. Then Roku came out with their own player, and its performance is miles ahead of Chaneru.

I don't know if Roku was hiding functionality from the developer community, but there's no comparison between them. I feel bad for the Chaneru developer, as I helped him out getting it to work with Serviio, and then Roku comes in with a free app.

If there's another DLNA player for the Roku, I'm unaware of it. The RMP and Chaneru are pretty much your only options.

Thanks @atc98092. There are a few other Roku DLNA players, such as Rokbox, and many written specifically for other DLNA servers (e.g., Playon, Plex, etc.). The latter being available through the private streaming channels Roku offers by entering the code for the app within your account, and then that app is pushed to your roku devices. Are you saying that the Library update issue I am experiencing is because of the Roku Media Player? Cheers.

I wasn't counting the ones that depend on a specific server, such as Plex. When I first tested Plex it didn't support DLNA, but it has since been added. Plex is of course a solid choice for a Roku, and has a very nice user interface. I still prefer Serviio, for both its functionality as well as the ability to modify the profile easily.

I doubt the Roku has anything to do with your update issue. With the prior version some people had refresh issues, and if you are using a remote drive there are some suggestions in other posts about changing a setting (that escapes me at the moment). Remember too that when using a remote hard drive you have to ensure permissions are correctly set. Serviio runs as a local Windows Service (or other type of local service for other OSs), and usually does not have network permissions. The simplest method to resolve that is to change the service user account to the same account you log into the computer with. This way, anything you can access while browsing, Serviio can access as well.

Thanks. I prefer Serviio as well, and have seen it become more robust with every new version since 2010! I find Plex bloated and unintuitive; it doesn't like my file structure and gets the metadata all wrong for each and every file! PlayOn works nicely on Roku, but there are issues with remote access and DNS that prevent using all of their "Channel" features when not a U.S. customer. On your advice, I have changed the permissions on the Serviio Windows Service to log in as the administrator, rather than as Local System. The external drive is set with the same in sharing permissions. We'll see if that resolves the library file refresh issue on the network.

This is resolved now, thanks to finding traces of what to do in other forum posts here. I changed the permissions on the serviio service to log in as administrator rather than local system, and changed sharing permissions on the external drive to give administrator full access rather than everyone. Now updates to the library are occurring as soon as files are added to the drive. Thanks to all for your help!
