New 1.6 console

Just installed and whilst the web console is cleaner in some ways it does not show the same info as the old which was more of a dashboard

In particular why do I have to go the windows task manager to check if the server is running....or am I missing something

I expected status to tell me everything I needed to know on ..well ....status :-)

One more comment more of a tech question really.
When I see the list of recently connected devices there is a huge number.
Mostly repeats such as our 2 x PS3's creating dozens of entries probably determined by the same device changing IP addresses from the DNS server
Lots of unrecognised devices...including our smart TV's
Basically it ends up telling you very little but I am not sure how it could be improved to give a clean picture but certainly splitting this list into 'currently connected' and 'recently connected' would help

any feedback appreciated

Re: New 1.6 console

Actually, the console has never shown the status of the Serviio service itself. It showed the status of the DLNA server function, which could be toggled from the console. But this function was completely different and had no effect on the service itself. So there's no change there. And that particular function is still on the new console. At's at the bottom of the status panel, but you might have to scroll down to see it.

The console does attempt to tell you which devices are currently connected with the colored dot at the left end of each row. However, many devices don't report their status to Serviio according to DLNA specifications, and as such never accurately show their status. The Roku players are one such device. Because of this, I wouldn't expect Serviio to self clean the list. My Sony devices do the same, they will continue to show DLNA server devices long after they are no longer there, and must be removed manually.

Re: New 1.6 console

I think the issue may be that the Server Status is at the bottom of the Status tab. If you have a long list of devices, then this may be off your screen (scroll down and you should see it).

I think there is probably some room for improvement here, such as:

  • Moving the Server Status to the top of that screen; or have the Server Status appear on the Welcome tab - with no option to control it (and retain it at the bottom of the Status tab where you then have the option to stop/start it. I dont think its an often used function so it's probably better to keep it toward the bottom);
  • Sorting the devices into active and inactive and perhaps having the inactive devices as a collapsible list, or scrollable lists.
I think there's a bitbucket request related to this - I'll add to that.

To clean up your list simply remove any inactive devices. I then recommend assigning reserved IP addresses to all of your normal renderer devices so that they are not continually re-added every time their IP address gets (re-)assigned.

Re: New 1.6 console

Actually the previous Serviio displayed a system tray icon when serviio was active just like many other servers do that also allowed the start stop of the console as well as serviio itself. The concept in the new version that Serviio starts and never ends and gives users no control is pretty absurd. I have implemented my own system tray icon dashboard for 1.6 that allows me to not only start and stop the console and stop serviio as before but also to invoke other serviio related activity like display the log or edit the profile or list the sobs, as well as kill ffmpeg and turn debug off and on. Serviio itself should offer this control to its users.

Please stop spreading this false information. I told you a few times the tray icon was there when the console was running... nothing to do with the server process. (in 1.5, bith server and console were 2 different processes communication via HTTP) You could tell the server is running, because the (minimised) console managed to connect to it, but it's just a side effect. If the server was down, you'd see a popup in the middle of your screen with a connection error message.

The concept in the new version that Serviio starts and never ends and gives users no control is pretty absurd.

You can stop the UPnP server status - ie, stop streaming. If you want to stop the service, there is an item in the Start menu. So saying there is no control is pretty absurd.

Cool, and there is also Win Helper (viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12136) that offers some functionality that is not there out of the box.

Re: New 1.6 console

Thanks I appreciate your points. I was unaware of WinHelper. At first glance it might be what I was looking for. :D
