Looking at space used by 1.6 vs 1.5.2. Installed 1.6 over 1.5.2 and Cache has doubled 104MB to 205MB.
Thumbnail.data more than doubled 87MB to 181MB, Tokens.data 55KB to 85KB and on-line metadata 15MB to 22MB.
Any reason why?

No, nothing changed in relation to online sources.

Reinstalled 1.6 over 1.5.2 rather than over RC1 - OK now.
