I have been using serviio for 2 weeks now,and I find it an excellent dlna server :P
Being fairly new to network streaming,I am a novice, however enthusiastic to learn the technical aspects.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated please......

(with transcoding enabled) my renderer (sony bdp s480) does not play video codecs: MPEG-4 VIDEO (DX50) and H264-MPEG4 AVC(part 10)(H264) and also H264=MPEG4 AVC(part 10)(avc1)

I have the sony bdp s370 which plays some (DX50) files that the s480 can't play. I am aware Sony dropped divx support from the '80' generation players.

Can I re-encode these files ?

I am also considering the Samsung bd d5300, as its selling cheap atm. Will the d5300 (serviio enabled) have better file compatibility and speed, compared to the Sony's ?

Thanks in advance.

sony and samsung compare about the same at the top of the DLNA enabled renderers spec sheet.

Thanks.
I am converting the video files that don't play on the S370/S480 to mkv files using 'freemake video converter' and they now play fine via serviio.

Its just that 'freemake' is so damn slow! Any faster (free) video converters you could recommend?

Also, would you say the Sony devices have faster menu interfaces then the Samsung's?

Thanks

menu speed is almost identical, as for converting video's other than high bitrate everything i through at mine plays.

I have succeeded in playing .mkv files from my NAS to my BD-D5300 no problem, sorry to say this but it works with no problem with the Samsung Allshare software. Just install the Samsung Allshare software on the PC that you want to access files from and just add them in the settings to share the folers that they are in. Once Allshare finds the BD-D5300's IP then add it to Allshare, then got the Disc Menu on the player and choose the Allshare and it should show you all the folders that you added to share and access.

Sorry it isn't Serviio but it is the only one that works for now, I tried Serviio but it wouldn't play .mkv files but everything else, I think Serviio needs more research or testing with .mkv files.
