I can think of one reason it wouldn't be practical. Remember that for home media servers (such as Serviio) the media is usually a full rip of a purchased disc. That means a simple DVD would take from 4-6GB of storage space on the device you download it to. A 1080 Bu Ray might be from 15-40GB, and and a 4K title might be exceed 70GB. Even my Load of the Rings 1080 rips are 60-69GB. There's also the potential of the codecs used in the media not being supported by the OS of the device. I know Windows by default does not support H.265 without a paid download from the Windows Store. And the lossless audio codecs might be an issue as well. Not a problem if the media has multiple audio tracks, and the player can select a standard DD track.
Of course, using VLC as the video player resolves many of these issues. Great player, terrible user interface on most devices, especially Android based players.
