Update to Serviio 1.2.1 for Synology

Hello,

I updated my Serviio for my synology device and it deleted all of my Videos, 1.3 Terabytes worth...needless to say i am more than pissed off.

I had the videos in the Homes directory as Serviio wouldn't index anything outside of that directory, as much as i tried to get it to, it wouldn't index.

So i just moved my videos to the user home directory and put them there, and Serviio worked fine with them there, however when i did the update, it deleted the user home directory and deleted all of my videos with it...

ANY SUGGESTIONS TO GET THEM BACK?

That is unfortunate and must be very irritating - however it is mentioned in the notes of the Serviio for Synology page that your media folders need to be accessible to the serviio user account in order to be added to the library, so that would have been the intended way to do it, rather than move all your content to a risky destination folder to use without knowing the Package Center behaviour. It was default behaviour up until DSM 4.1 to delete all profile info when a user is deleted, and I continued this to be sure that a clean reinstall of a package removes all previous state info, and is just that - a clean install. Unfortunately the way Package Center carries out an upgrade always involves running the uninstall and re-install parts of the scripts (which destroy and re-create the daemon user), even though separate upgrade behaviour exists to preserve the database.

I would suggest not writing anything to the drive containing your lost data (since deleting a file only removes it from the file allocation table - the data remains on the disk), and investigating generic Linux file recovery methods. If there's a tool that needs compiling I may be able to have a look at that for you.

I will double check that the serviio user has access, I though I had set it up where even a guest had read/write (I am guess this isn't good enough though)

I was upset when I wrote the post, I think, I am ok with it deleting the videos, I didn't even watch most of what was there, I guess I can look at this as a blessing in disguise, and only get and keep what I am going to watch.

I don't have the room to perform that type of data recovery anyway, so even if i did, I don't have anywhere to put the informaton anyhow.

Just a question though, how would I make sure that I am putting the correct path for the directory for serviio? I might just be putting in the wrong path?

Ok, well I think I'll have to add a caveat to my webpage to make sure no one else loses a lot of data. I was quite worried they could have been your home videos or something. I reckon you could still have a go at recovery though - if it's anything like Windows file recovery you should be able to get a lot back provided you didn't write further data to the volume (overwriting some of the data blocks used by the lost files).

No, I didn't lose any home video types.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can find the exact path of the videos directory so I can have Serviio find it?

Normally it will be /volume1/sharename where sharename is the root level folder you can see in DSM.

For the undelete, Synology uses ext4 filesystem so this utility should work:

I'll see about compiling it for Synology. Which model NAS are you using? Of course, every minute your NAS is still running reduces the chance of getting any of the deleted content back...

I am not worried about recovery anymore, I don't have anywhere to put the recovered files anyhow.

I did get the serviio application to see the directory I wanted it to in the first place, I had to change the permissions for the serviio user and got the path from the file browser in DSM, this works now and serviio is indexing the videos just fine.

P.S. I am not worried about recovery only because i didn't watch 1/3 of the videos anyhow, most of them were just for backup purposes for the DVDs i have since i have moved around a lot and some of the dvds got misplaced. But I really do appreciate the help you provided.
