Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ & serviio

Hey guys,

I've been running serviio from my Windows 7 64 PC for some time, streaming wirelessly to my PS3 and Sony Bravia TV, but would like to look at reducing power consumption by switching off my PC rather than have it running 24/7. With this in mind, I've thought about setting up a NAS and serving the media directly from it.

I've seen a good price on a secondhand Netgear ReadyNAS NV+, but haven't seen too much written about it in these forums. Is this NAS up to the task? Is it easy to install and run serviio on it?

Cheers,
NRB

Re: Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ & serviio

Doesn't anyone have any experience with it?

It comes with 25MB of RAM, is this adequate for transcoding etc, or should it be upgraded to say 1GB?

I'm also considering a Synology NAS, perhaps DS413J?

Re: Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ & serviio

I too am an addicted serviio lover. I use it to stream many albums, and many movies all the time. Works great.
I also have a ReadyNas NV+ (ver1) For starters what I can tell you is the following:
I started out using my ReadyNas unit as a DLNA server- it does this fairly well. I always used 1Gig Ram (so I can't tell you if a lower
version will do or not.) BUT not as well as Serviio. The unit would play some formats of movies, but not others. The key to serviio is the
trans coding, this is what makes it a better server. (Different formats make the ReadyNas Inferior)
You can turn on the DLNA server in add ins, and give it a try, but serviio is my hands down choice.
Feel free to contact me at: Maxpower1@aol.com use :Serviio Friend (in the Subject Line)
I use my ReadyNas for backups, etc- and leave the serving to Serviio :D
