PC hangs on shut down since modifying Serviio

Before I went away for a couple of weeks, I asked for help in waking/connecting with serviio from my Vista Ultimate PC, and you guys sorted it for me :D :-
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2799
It seemed that the problem was that my PC was obtaining a new IP address at each boot.
I don't know a lot about this and thought that IP addresses were assigned by the service provider.
It appears that whilst this is so, it's not the whole story!
My Router then has it's own stack of IP addresses (presumably for my home network use) and this is where I have opted to have a fixed IP address............?? is that right??

Any way, since making the changes discussed in the above thread, we have had this problem with the PC hanging at shutdown.
Each time we have had to do a hard shutdown, which is not good for the OS, and this is inevitably followed by this message at next boot:- "Windows did not shut down properly, do you wish to start normally?"
Nothing else has been altered since the above thread, no new software, no "Windows update files" nothing, so I'm pretty confident that something documented in the above thread has caused this.
Please can someone help me before the poor OS becomes corrupted.
Thanks.

I do not see how giving the computer a static IP Address would cause the OS to hang up on shutdown. Can you take the static IP off the computer and see if it still hangs up? This will help us troubleshoot what is going on.

Hi moltra! that was quick!!
Agreed, I know precious little, but would not have expected that.
I will remove the "fixed IP assignment" and see if it has any effect.
It may take some time, since we have noticed that the "hang" only happens when the PC has been on for several hours....I don't know how many Hrs, but I find that it shuts down normally if it's only been on for two hours....odd!

I was thinking maybe the difficulty I had deleting the startup folder might have something to do with it.
Just grasping at straws really, I'm totally lost!
All I know is that when something unexpected happens, it's usually caused by the last lot of poking around.
In this case the actions taken in that thread. :?

Also check the free space on the harddrive. If it is getting full, it can slow down a computer on shutdown.

I would also check the computer for dust. If it is getting dusty, it will heat up and then when it is shutdown you could get some errors and cause it to shutdown slowly.

Re: PC hangs on shut down since modifying Serviio

The C disk is about 30% and others less than 20% full.
Not looked inside the case in three years  but it is off the floor, so won't be full of carpet!
What I've noticed at shutdown is that there is the usual disk activity as files are written back, then the activity light goes out and nothing else changes!
I'll check inside the case for fluff and anything that might be obstructing cooling, but it might be a day or so! :|
Regards.

Assigning a fixed(static) ip will nto affect the shutdown of your pc, my guess would be something else is happening i know there was a shutdown issue with windows but i thoguh microsoft fixed that with an update, you might want to check that windows has all teh current updates installed.

Re: PC hangs on shut down since modifying Serviio

Just thinking about it, I can rule out a cooling problem.
I have, on a couple of occasions when it's been "hanging" pressed the re-set button which immediately re-boots the PC regardless of the fact that it was hanging.
Once the desktop has loaded, I have again shut down,.... this time faultlessly.

Cerberus: in response to your post just made, all Windows updates are installed.

Re: PC hangs on shut down since modifying Serviio

Just an update on my problem with the hang on shutdown.
When I was trying to get Serviio to delay it's start, I deleted the "All Progs. Startup folder" which only had "Serviio" in it.
Re-instating this folder (still containing the Serviio logo) seems to have at least allowed my machine to shut down completely.......albeit very slowly!
Any ideas if that could be the cause,....and if I could get the shut down back to it's previous 2/3 minutes?
