[SOLVED] Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

As stated, I've got a "2010" model Bravia KDL40NX803, but it doesn't feature in your list of 2010 models at the top of this forum...not sure what that implies! :(

I'm here after whingeing on the Sony forum about the "pickyness" of this TV when attempting to play video from my PC.
It will only play Mpeg 2 files, and even then, it rejects some and plays others all converted with the same software!
I've minutely examined each file's "properties" and can find no differences!

"Catmambo" from Sony recommended this software which I've downloaded but before I install it, can someone explain a few things to me?

Does it alter my existing file system or create it's own?

I've seen lots of "code" on this forum....do I really need to "get down and dirty" with it?

Does the fact that my model doesn't feature in your list bode ill for me?

Please keep it simple!....I've managed to master most things on computers but video, codecs, containers etc is something of a black art to me!

Just re-reading the list of 2010 models, they are using firmware ver. PKG4.099EUL-0108, mine is ever so slightly different... :- ver. PKG4.099EUH-0108
just thought it might be helpful! :D

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

Hi hexeta,
Thanks for your remarks.

Your model NX803 use the latest firmware version PKG4.099EUH-0108 (18/04/2011).
Following models use the same firmware file:
KDL-40NX700 / NX703 / NX705 / NX800 / NX803 / NX805
KDL-46NX700 / NX703 / NX705
KDL-52NX800 / NX803 / NX805

I think that your model is compatible with the Sony Bravia 2010 profile because they all use the same DLNA feature. (I update the "[Readme] Sony Bravia 2010 series" topic)

Serviio is recommended for Sony Bravia by Sony uk: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2418

hexeta wrote:Does it alter my existing file system or create it's own?

Not sure to understand.

Serviio will install a software on your computer system (one service and one console).
Connect your Sony Bravia with your computer (ethernet cable).
You will add path to your movies/images/musics directory.
Serviio will scan and create a library.
Your original media files will not be modified, read only.

So, let's go, download and install Serviio on your computer, add path to the library, wait the end of the path scan, enjoy with the DLNA feature of your Sony Bravia TV.

That answers my question re: my file system, thanks.
Illico wrote:Connect your Sony Bravia with your computer (ethernet cable).

My TV is already wirelessly connected to my home network, and can access my PC's "Public Folders ".
Do I still have to make a wired connection to set up Serviio?

Can't wait!

You could start with Wifi connection, but for HD movie streaming over DLNA ethernet protocol, I recommend to use Wired connection.

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

Hi Guys, I've installed Serviio and it has "found" my TV.
As instructed, I've pointed it at the Media folders, and they now appear on my TV....well, most of the files do!
There are still some that are "invisible" to the TV even using Serviio.
Also, some of my video files just show the picture, no sound or short bursts of very broken up sound.
I am surprised that I still cannot view ".ts" files copied from my PVR although they show correct thumbnails....do I need to convert them to some other format first?

One problem that worries me is this warning:-
Second warning from Firewall.jpg
Second warning from Firewall.jpg (36.06 KiB) Viewed 19148 times

Notice the comment:-
"THIS PROGRAMME HAS ALREADY BEEN BLOCKED OR UNBLOCKED FOR A DIFFERENT NETWORK LOCATION"
As it points out, I have indeed unblocked this programme before.
If I continue to un-block it at every boot, I will soon have all my ports open to the world!
Can you please tell me why it needs internet access, I cannot see any difference in performance when it is blocked from connecting to the net.
If it is necessary, can I confine it to one specific port??

the reason it asks for access to the internet is to download meta data for your movie and tv files.

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

This is not really asking for opening ports to the internet, it's only asking for the multicast UDP ports and local TCP port for the TV's to connect to. Is it possible that your PC changes IP address every time it boots (changes the whole subnet, not just the last bit of the IP address)

No idea what the answers meant, but thanks anyway for trying to educate me.
Any advice on the other question? :-

Can you enable detailed logging (see signature) and post it on here, you might need to zip it.

Before you post it play a few of the files that mess up and also post a few of the file names that do not show up.

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

Sorry but your instructions are a little beyond me!
I would not feel comfortable trying to carry them out.
I have managed to access most of the files that would not play correctly by converting them to Mpeg2, the TV cannot see them using WMP, but now it can see and play them satisfactorily with Serviio, so that is now OK....I think!

The only file types my TV can't play with either serviio or WMP is the ".ts" files which I've copied from my PVR machine.
they are one hour programmes, I know they are "playable" using VLC....how can I get Serviio to show these, do I have to convert these also to some other format?

Finally, I now have two instances of Serviio showing on my TV, for each media type...Photo, Music and video.
One is a "live" yellow icon the other is a generic disconnected grey icon. :o
When any of the grey Icons are selected, the TV says "Connecting to server" ...but never seems to do it! :?

How do I get rid of the extra instances?
Am I Just unlucky, or is this software known to be unstable? :(

Actually Serviio is one of the most stable DLNA servers that I have used. I would guess that unless you have installed Serviio on 2 computers, that the IP address has changed for the serviio computer and the TV still has the old IP address (gray icon)along with the current IP address.

You might want to set static IP addresses for both the computer and the TV.

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

Yep, you can remove the old Serviio icon from the Tv menu somewhere - it has been answered on this forum already. Moltra is correct, you probably have a dynamic IP for the PC running Serviio, i suggest to setup static IP on your router so that you don't end up with many 'greyed out' entries.

a .ts file is just mpeg2 TS file. They should play without problem. Just make sure you have the proper profile selected. If the files don't show on the tv at all, post ffmpeg -i of the files

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

Thanks for that zip,
I've just been looking on the router interface but the TV doesn't appear in the list of "WLAN" items.
My PC does however appear twice:-
Information
Status: Inactive
Type: Generic Device
Connected To: WLAN (Wireless)
Allowed on WLAN: Yes
Addressing
Physical Address: 00:a0:96:55:d5:d7.... The second entry's address is 00:15:af:86:da:31
IP Address Assignment: DHCP
IP Address: 192.168.1.104.... The second entry's address is 00:15:af:86:da:31
Always use the same address: No
DHCP Lease Time: 0 days, 0:44:33

Having copied and pasted all that, I'll leave it, but I think I've "found" the TV ;) it is the Mac address: 00:a0:96:55:d5:d7
just described as a second "My PC".....I've also discovered that I can "delete" the redundant icon from the TV display. 8-)

I've no idea how the router decides to assign IP addresses as static or otherwise, I certainly don't have any input to the decision!
In the event that I could change the TV or the PC's assigned "IP Type", I'm not sure I would care to do it as I fear all sorts of repercussions to my home network which I sweated blood to establish, and it has performed faultlessly for the last three years!

Concerning the ".ts" files, they show as ".ts" until they are highlighted when they show as "MPEG2", the thumbnails are correct, and as I select play, they seem to be loading but trhen the screen is just black with no sound and the green ">" indicating "play" shows for a few seconds.

that's correct, looks like a normal DVD-like video. Proper profile is Sony Bravia for you, make sure it's selected in the console for your device.

Thanks zip, have checked the console, and Sony Bravia TV is selected along with the model No. under "Device Name"
So, if there is nothing wrong with the file, how do I get it to play? :?

Re: Totally lost! help!! KDL40NX803

Think I was getting confused over the ".ts" files, I thought I couldn't play them on my PC using Media Player, but I can!
That being the case, why the heck are they invisible when I look for them using Media Player on my TV?
Again tried to play one using Serviio, and all happened as previously described....it's just as if I'm playing a silent movie of a black screen....watching the router, the WAN light is flashing like mad, and the Internet light flashes occasionally.
I sat and observed this for almost 5 minutes, just in case it was taking a while to process the info (it's a one hour programme), but there was nothing.
When I cancelled the play request, the router lights stopped flashing, so there is something trying to happen, it's just not resulting in sound and vision.
I can't even play the .ts video of Quo "In The Army Now" which is considerably shorter, so it's not a problem with the video length  .....how can I get these files to play? :?

I'm using Vista Ultimate on my main PC, and don't have VLC on it, that said, as I've posted above, all my .ts files play in WMP.
I have another PC with XP Pro and a lappy with XP Home both have VLC, and these files play perfectly.
My only disapointment was that the subtitles that were visible when played on my PVR seem to have been lost in the transfer to the PC because WMP doesn't show them and VLC seems to indicate that there is no Subtitle file with the video/audio.
